Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping?
It's Telling You Something Is Wrong.

A breaker that trips once is doing its job. A breaker that keeps tripping is a warning sign — of an overloaded circuit, a short circuit, or a failing breaker. Spark Doc Electric diagnoses the root cause and fixes it right. Serving all of Johnson County KS, Jackson County MO, and Wyandotte County KS.

Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping?

Breakers trip to protect your wiring from overheating. When one trips repeatedly, there's a consistent underlying problem. The four main causes:

Overloaded Circuit

Too many devices drawing more current than the circuit is rated for. Classic on kitchen and bathroom circuits. Fix: add a dedicated circuit.

Short Circuit

A hot wire touching a neutral or ground wire — in an outlet, appliance, or inside a wall. Trips the breaker instantly. Needs professional diagnosis.

Ground Fault

Current leaking from a hot wire to a grounded surface — common in wet areas. GFCI breakers trip faster than standard ones for this reason.

Worn Breaker

Breakers wear out over time and can start tripping below their rated load. If it's an old panel, the breaker itself may need replacing.

How to Reset a Tripped Breaker

  1. Unplug or turn off devices on the affected circuit
  2. Find the breaker — it'll be in the middle or OFF position
  3. Push it firmly to OFF, then back to ON
  4. If it trips again immediately — stop. Call an electrician.

When Is It Time to Call an Electrician?

You can reset a tripped breaker once to restore power. But if any of these apply, stop resetting and call us:

  • The breaker trips again immediately after resetting
  • You smell burning when the breaker trips
  • The breaker feels hot or looks discolored
  • It keeps tripping even with minimal load on the circuit
  • Multiple breakers are tripping at the same time

Our Approach

We don't just swap the breaker and call it done. We test the circuit under load, check for wiring faults, and identify whether the problem is the breaker, the circuit, or an appliance — so we fix the actual problem, not just the symptom.

Tripped Breaker FAQ

Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?
A breaker that repeatedly trips is telling you something is wrong — either the circuit is overloaded, there's a short circuit (a hot wire touching a neutral or ground), a ground fault, or the breaker itself is worn out and tripping below its rated capacity.
Is it safe to keep resetting a tripping breaker?
Once or twice to restore power while you investigate, yes. But if a breaker trips repeatedly, continuing to reset it is dangerous — it means your protection device is fighting a real problem. Repeated resets on a short circuit can cause wiring to overheat and start a fire.
How do I reset a tripped circuit breaker?
A tripped breaker will be in the middle position between ON and OFF, or fully OFF. First, turn off or unplug anything on that circuit. Then push the breaker firmly to OFF, then back to ON. If it trips again immediately, do not keep resetting — call an electrician.
What is the difference between an overloaded circuit and a short circuit?
An overloaded circuit draws more current than the breaker's rating — usually from too many appliances at once. A short circuit is when a hot wire touches a neutral or ground wire, causing a sudden surge of current. Short circuits usually trip the breaker instantly and need professional diagnosis.
Can a bad appliance cause a breaker to trip?
Yes. A failing appliance with damaged internal wiring can create a short circuit or ground fault every time it's plugged in. If the breaker only trips when a specific appliance is running, unplug it. If the problem goes away, the appliance is likely the culprit.
