Half Your House Lost Power?
Here's What's Happening.
A partial power outage — where some rooms work and others don't — is usually a sign of a failed leg of service, a panel issue, or a utility problem. Spark Doc Electric diagnoses it fast and gets your power back on. Serving all of Johnson County KS, Jackson County MO, and Wyandotte County KS.
Why Is Half My House Without Power?
Your home's electrical service comes in on two "legs" — each carrying 120 volts, combining for 240 volts for large appliances. When one leg fails, roughly half your circuits go dark while the other half stay lit. It can look confusing because it's not a room-by-room split — it follows which circuits were wired on which leg.
The three main causes we see:
-
Utility company fault — A problem with the transformer or service drop (the wires from the pole to your meter) that affects one leg. Call your utility first to rule this out.
-
Failed main breaker — A failing main breaker that's losing one leg of its connection. This needs immediate attention.
-
Loose connection at the service entrance — A corroded or loose connection at the meter box or main panel lugs can interrupt one leg of service — and can arc and cause a fire.
1. Check your breaker panel — look for any breaker in the middle (tripped) position and reset it. 2. Look for tripped GFCI outlets in your kitchen, bathrooms, garage, and exterior. 3. Call your utility company to ask if there's a known outage. If all that checks out, call us.
What We Do When We Arrive
We don't just reset things and hope for the best. Our process:
- Verify the scope — We test voltage at the panel to confirm whether you're missing a full leg or just have isolated circuit problems.
- Check the utility connection — We test at the meter to determine whether the problem is on your side or the utility's.
- Inspect the panel — We check main breaker contacts, bus bars, and connections for signs of heat, arcing, or loose connections.
- Diagnose and quote — You get a clear explanation and upfront price before we do any work.
- Fix it right — Whether it's a panel repair, service upgrade, or coordination with your utility, we handle it completely.
