Flickering Lights in Your Home?
Don't Ignore It.
Flickering lights are one of the most common signs of a dangerous wiring problem. Spark Doc Electric diagnoses and fixes the root cause — same day when possible. Serving Olathe, Overland Park, Kansas City, and the entire tri-county metro.
What Causes Flickering Lights?
Flickering lights aren't just annoying — they're often a symptom of an underlying electrical problem that needs professional attention. Here are the most common causes we see across the Kansas City metro:
-
Loose wire connections — The most common cause. A loose wire at the fixture, switch, outlet, or breaker creates intermittent contact and flickering. It can also arc, which is a serious fire hazard.
-
Overloaded circuits — When a circuit draws more power than it's designed for, voltage drops cause lights to dim or flicker, especially when large appliances kick on.
-
Failing breaker or panel issue — A worn breaker or loose connection inside the panel can cause flickering throughout a whole circuit or the entire home.
-
Loose neutral wire — A loose neutral at the main panel or service entrance can cause whole-house flickering and is one of the more dangerous scenarios.
-
Failing fixture or bulb — Sometimes it really is just a dying bulb or a fixture at the end of its life. We rule this out first before looking deeper.
If you notice flickering accompanied by a burning smell, buzzing or crackling sounds from walls or the panel, or lights flickering in your whole house — call immediately. These are signs of electrical arcing, which can ignite insulation inside your walls without any visible warning.
When Is It Normal?
Brief dimming when your AC, refrigerator, or other large appliance starts up is usually normal — those motors draw a surge of current on startup. If the dimming is brief (less than a second) and only happens when the appliance kicks on, it's likely not a problem.
But if lights flicker randomly, persistently, in multiple rooms, or without any obvious trigger — that needs to be looked at.
Our Diagnostic Process
We don't guess. We use a systematic approach: check the fixture and bulb first, test the circuit under load, inspect the wiring connections at switches and outlets, and check the panel last. You get a clear explanation of what we found and a straight quote before we start any work.
